As is the case in many developing countries, Indonesia is a warrior's society. Although their soldiery often display a banana-republic appearance and lack of discipline, the military is this nation's only credible political power at present. The army calls itself the 'New Order' and the concensus is that eventually the country will be ready for permanent civilian rule, the military looking upon itself as a sort of temporary reform regime. Dads love to dress their little sons up in generals' uniforms adorned with medals and braids, and half the streets are named after soldiers or revolutionary heroes. Everywhere in Indonesia you see army officers in their Mercedes or shiny jeeps with furled flags cruising past the burdened peasants.

Aristocrats with a new face. The army's continuing power and presitge is a leftover from its role in the early days of the republic when the civil administration was still disrupted after the rebellion against the Dutch. The army fought side by side with the people for their freedom and the people trust them. Usually there's an army level of command which corresponds to each function of the civil government from the village right up to the province. The army not only considers itself as a watchdog of the state, but also as a socio-political force which stabilizes the state and defines its objectives. But anybody knows that politics is much too serious a business to leave up to mere generals. The army is only a miniature Indonesia and it's just as regionalist and corrupt as the civil service and the business world. At its best, it's the peoples' friend. At its worst, it's a terrorizing and intimidating secret police. On Jan. 16, 1974, eleven students were shot dead in the Jakarta riots which were staged by a powerful general to discredit his rival; the rival subsequently lost his job. (The army has a history of organizing mobs of civilians demonstrators to get its way).

All Indonesian dynasties since the 14th Century Majapahit have maintained their power through appearances. Each must only appear strong and invincible. The present government artificially suppresses the price of rice so that the people are at least able to feed their bellies. If the price of rice were allowed to go its own way and follow the careening inflation rate, there would be unrest throughout the land. As a traveler you'll notice definite fascist tendencies (like blacking pages critical of Indonesia out of Time and Newsweek magazines). And even if you stay as a guest of a family they must register you with the neighborhood police or the R.T. (Rukun Tetangga) within 24 hours. Reason? To avoid suspicion (and a Rp50,000 fine). The government is paranoid of communists and you could be one.
