Throughout
these islands there are some 250 distinct languages spoken (about
40 language clusters!, with many of these separated into different
dialects. Often the inhabitants of the same island don't speak
the same native tongue such as the Javanese and Sundanese on Java,
and alone on the tiny island of Alor there are some 70 separate
languages. Fortunately one language, Bahasa Indonesia, is taught
in all schools from at least the 3rd grade. Each ethnic region
of Indonesia speaks its own accented form of Bahasa Indonesia;
the Javanese speak it very slow and monotonous while the Sundanese
very sing-song, and the Irianese an archaic form taught by missionaries.
The Indonesian language is the one cultural element that unifies
the entire population. It is the only language used in official
and popular publications, road signs, advertising etc. Just as
you can use American in Scotland, if you learn Indonesian well
you can use it all over Malaysia, Singapore, and in the Malaysian
portions of northern Borneo. English is the most spoken foreign
language in Indonesia. Many people over 40 on Java can speak Dutch,
but not many can on the outer islands (except Ambon and Minahasa).
