Indonesia's
most important ethnic minority and largest alien group. In the
Riau Archipelago Chinese make up more than one fifth the total
population, and in Pontianak, West Kalimahtan, the Chinese form
3/5's of the total. Although only 3% (3.5 million) of the total
population of Indonesia, the Chinese control about 70% of the
economy. They succeed in all fields: as professionals, bankers,
moneylenders, traders, artisans, plantation overseers, shopkeepers,
machine shop workers, mechanics. Chinese migrants were first brought
in by the Dutch during colonial times to work as coolies. Later
they were introduced to create a merchant class, enjoying many
more privileges in the Dutch multi-caste society than Indonesians
enjoyed. In the 20th Century, Nationalist fighters remember with
bitterness the indifference and opposition with which most Chinese
looked upon the revolutionary struggle. It's this very class of
Indonesians who today form the civil bureaucracy and officer corp
in the army.

Thus
there is much hostility against them. Other Indonesians resent
and envy them for their wealth and business skills. Periodic purges
- economic, social, physical violence - are perpetrated against
them. The government prevents Chinese from settling in rural areas
in large numbers nor are Chinese allowed to run their own schools,
newspapers, or political parties. They may not keep dual citizenship
and must even take on Indonesian surnames. Chinese characters
have been erased, by government order, from all of Indonesia's
Chinatowns. But you can't really define Chinese in Indonesia by
racial, legal or cultural criteria, but solely on their social
identification. The Chinese have adapted in different ways to
the Indonesian environment. Hokkiens (found in West Sumatra and
throughout East Indonesia), whose decendants came from southern
Fukien, are today merchants and traders; Teochius (found in East
Sumatra and in the Riaus) originally come from Swatow and operate
most of the market gardens. Cantonese, mineworkers initially,
have become skilled tradesmen, restaurant owners and hardware
store owners.

The
Hakkas, an historically aloof mountain people from Kwangtung Province
in China, were miners; now they have settled in West Java, Borneo,
and on Bangka Island . In West Kalimantan the Hakkas have abandoned
their age-old wet rice cultivation from China which used the plow,
sickle and threshing box and have taken on the local Malay harvesting
blade and the Dayak digging stick! Other Chinese have become thoroughly
Indonesianized, having intermarried with Indonesians, many often
illiterate in Chinese languages. The name for these Chinese-Indonesians
is peranakan (Children of the Indies), a group which has evolved
its own customs, law, dialect and cuisine. Peranakan-Chinese have
lost more of their Chinese-ness than have most of the world's
23 million or so overseas Chinese; they are looser, funkier, less
inhibited and reserved than for example Singaporean or Taiwanese
Chinese.
