The best possible preparation you could have in the understanding of this religion is simply to read the Koran. There's been little change in the core of Islamic religious thought over the past 500 years. The word Islam means 'submission'; this oath demands that you unconditionally surrender to the highest wisdom of Allah. This religion is much more than just a belief system, it's a way of life, a system of society, philosophy, law, science, art. At its best, it's democratic and egalitarian. Devotion is the responsibility of the individual and there are no social prerequisites or hierarchal structures. Islam is bound to no locality since a man may worship in a ricefield, home, prayerhouse, or on a mountaintop. It compells people to travel to Mecca and to use individual initiative and thereby independence. The confession of faith in orthodox Islam, La ilaha it/a /lah, means 'There is no God but Allah.' It's a fatalistic religion, if something goes wrong, 'Allah willed it.' Islam is a moralistic religion and its followers are required to lead moralistic lives. If done correctly, the reading of the Koran and the postures of praying demand great precision.
