++

Go directly to the town or island where the item is produced because there's a much wider selection and the artisans are more agreeable to bargaining than shopkeepers. Many villages specialize in their own crafts. Don't let anyone take you into a shop because their commission will be tacked on to the price you pay, and they sometimes make a lot of trouble demanding their cut. Shops which are working on a low overhead don't want anything to do with them. You can spend 3 hours in an Indonesian shop unfolding and examining every single piece of batik, then leave with just a terimah kasih and no hard feelings (try this in money-fixated Singapore). Bring western clothes only for trading, and just one change of clothes to get on the plane with. Eventually you'll replace all your clothes with really cheap and lovely Indonesian-style garments which you can have tailor-made (be your own designer). Your safari-style jean jacket could fetch as much as Rp7000 in Indonesia, either in cash or in trading value, but jean trousers don't have such a high barter value any longer because everyone's got them.
