The detail on the carving of buffalo horn, bone, ivory and hornbill beak can be so extreme you need a magnifying glass to see the work. For carved tortoise shell and seashells go to the outer islands (Ambon) for the cheapest and the best. Leatherwork is done mainly in buffalo hide, the best known being the carved and gilded puppets used in wayang kulit. So strongly stylized that they look barely human, the eyes, nose and mouth are carved out last 'to break open' the puppet, i.e. to give the puppet life. Wood available is mostly teak, ironwood, and young ebony from which demons, nags, fish, etc. are carved. Dragons and other mythological creatures are popular on gong stands, prows of boats, beams of houses, and on temples. Many traditional handicrafts would have disappeared long ago if it weren't for tradition-loving souvenir-seeking tourists. And this is also why they've become so expensive. A good Balinese carved statue now costs up to US$250. Find almost any form of woodcarving: si gale gale life-sized wooden puppets which the Bataks of North Sumatra jerk to life at a childless person's death, eerie 2 m high ancestor figures of the Leti Islands in the Moluccas, handsome striped ebony chillums on Bali.
