Kartini Day: Kartini was Indonesia's first womens' emancipationist. Her collection of published letters written to close Dutch friends at the turn of the century are now a modern classic. In them she poured out her feelings about the restrictions imposed on her life by the feudal Javanese adat-system. She had had a formal Dutch high school education and was offered a Dutch scholarship. Then, instead of continuing her education, she was given in marriage. Kartini died in childbirth, age 24. There are parades, lectures, programs, and social activities attended by women, schoolgirls, university teachers, female workers, members of womens' organizations, all wearing their regional dress. Like Mother's Day, mothers aren't allowed to work, kids and fathers do the cooking, washing, housecleaning, etc. Many go on a pilgrimmage to the grave of Kartini near Rembang, Central Java
