Lebaran
(or Hari Raya): The Arabic Idul Fitri. The first day of the 10th
month of the Arabic calendar marking the end of the Muslim fast.
Lebaran is an outburst of celebrations climaxing a month of pent-up
tension and austerity. After tom-tomming all night long, the celebrations
usually begin at 7 am when everyone turns out for an open-air
service in the village square. Women dress in white, like nuns,
and mass prayers are held early in the morning of the first day
followed by 2 days of continuous feasting and public holidays.
Verses are sung from the Koran and sometimes there are religious
processions. Gifts are exchanged. A householder buys new clothing
for his servants and the children are given new clothes.
Leberan
is a joyous time for mutual forgiveness when pardon is asked for
all wrongs done during the past year; kind of like Christmas,
Valentine's Day, and the New Year's resolutions all rolled into
one. With everyone dressed in their finery, this is a time for
Muslim Indonesians to visit and revisit neighbors and relatives,
bringing gifts of specially prepared food, the best the family
can afford. At each house a cup of tea is served with a sweet
doughy cake and helpings after helpings from selections of bright
cookies until you burst. Lebaran continues until all the visits
to relatives are ended. A big family could celebrate Lebaran for
as long as a week.
