Since bamboo is so easily made into vessels, pottery and firing techniques have never developed into advanced crafts in these islands. Indonesia was once a big center for Chinese pottery and you can find well-preserved pieces in the far reaches of the archipelago: dug out of old Chinese graves on Sumba, in the Dayak longhouses of Borneo, in dusty souvenir shops in Ambon. The further away from the tourist centers, the cheaper. As well as the finer court ware, you also find 'Kitchen Ming', so named because it was utilized for everyday use by the Chinese 3-000 years ago. Giant Tang vases cost Rp50,000 in Ambon, and whole sets of Kitchen Ming perhaps as little as Rp25,000. Transport this venerable and expensive China on your lap on the plane.
