Proklamasi Kemerdekaan (Independence Day): A public holiday which marks the anniversary of Indonesian independence from Holland, declared in 1945. On August 17th, celebrations take place all over Indonesia. Proklamasi is the biggest Indonesian national holiday, celebrated differently on each island. In Aceh there are Arab ceremonies; in Wamena, Irian Jaya, Papuan tribal dancing and athletic events; in Manado, North Celebes, parade floats applaud the growth of industry. There are dances, public entertainments, performances. The tradition is for kids and youth organizations to take part in the festivities with parades and marches, and for the older generation to look on. Go out to the kampungs where village sports and games take place. Many of the resort towns and hill stations are crowded with domestic tourists at this time.
