Ramadan (or Puasa): The 9th month of the Javanese calendar. It is preceeded in Java by Padusan, a cleansing ceremony to prepare the spirit for the coming fasting month. Islamic fasting is more subtle than the drastic Hindu custom of total abstenance from all food and drink, Gandhi-style. Muslims are more into a moon-cycle. The whole family rises at 4 am, gorges themselves, then eats nothing during the daylight hours. Many visit family graves and royal cemetaries (Kota Gede and Imogiri on Java) where they recite prayers, strew flowers and holy water, burn incense. Special prayers are said at mosques and at home. Brand new velvet pecis are sold everywhere on the street. Ramadan is practiced with varying severity throughout the islands. Usually the only places to eat during this time in Islamic areas are dark, hidden, secretive back alley places
