arriving:
If by sea at Tanjung Priok, just walk 2 km from the docks to the
Tanjung Prick Bus Station and take a bus (Rp30) to Benteng Station
in the middle of the city. Or share a taxi (between 5 people),
Rp1500 into the city; have him drive through Chinatown on the
way. Arriving by air, it's Rp1500 from the airport by taxi to
most hotels. Be forewarned of the so-called taxis from Jakarta's
airports, locals call them sistem Jakarta (rip-off system), the
drivers claim that their meters are mati (dead). From Jakarta's
Halim International Airport, take bus into the city for Rp30.
transport: One of the most congested cities of Asia. Keystone
Cops.
Stay
low from 11-5 or you'll collapse from heat exhaustion. Crowded
intercity buses are the cheapest at Rp30; the main terminal is
Lapangan Benteng. Get ahold of a map at the tourist bureau (J
I. Thamrin 9) which shows all the main bus routes in Jakarta.
Most buses radiate from L. Benteng and most you jump on will eventually
end up there. Next cheapest are bemos or op/ets which go along
the main drags, Rp50-100 for an average run. Becaks cost Rp100-200
for a 1-3 km ride, but are banned from the downtown. If you take
a helicak, Rp2-300 for short distances, make sure that they take
you all the way and not drop you off at 'the border'.
