from
Jakarta by train: There's a number of different train stations
in Jakarta, but most trains leave from Gambir Station (centrally
located) and from Kota Station (not central, so allow time to
get there). Train prices vary greatly depending on class, speed
and/or comfort. Student discount is 25%. From Senen Station, the
Gayabaru II leaves for Semarang at 5:30 pm, arrives at 3 am; costs
Rp1750. This same train arrives the next day in Surabaya at 10
am; costs Rp2200. Buy tickets at Senen at 4 pm on day of departure.
This is the scenic 'northern route' of Java. The other train to
Surabaya from Kota Station is the cheaper Mutiara, Rp8500; departs
3:30 pm and arrives at 6:15 am. Only one class, has reclining
seats, and the price includes two meals.
Always
book your tickets at 10 am the day you want to leave because both
these trains are most always full. The cheap train to Surabaya
is the Gaya Malam, leaving at 2 pm from Gambir Station, arriving
at noon the next day so you'll be able to find a place to sleep.
Gambir Station handles most trains for the south: Yogya and Solo
(Central Java); the Jaya leaves for Yogya 4 times a day: 2 pm,
arrival at 2 am; 4:45 pm, arrival at 4 am; 6:17 pm, arrival at
6 am; 7:30 am, arrival at 7pm; economy class,'Rp1700. From Kota
Station, the Bima leaves at 2:30 pm, arrives in Surabaya at 7:30
the next morning; 1st class Rp 12,000, economy class Rp9000; takes
16 hours. Lousy food, dirty toilets.1st class has two berths while
economy class has 3 berths to a cabin. for Bandung: Most people
go by bus, but the fast train Parahiangan ('Abode of the gods')
is also convenient, getting you there 3 hours faster than the
'express train'; it's well ventilated and there's no standing
passengers; you can buy tickets only for Rp1700 seats. At least
6 trains a day for Bandung, leaving mostly from Kota station
