JI. Serang, Jati Petamburan, Cilandak, and Cipete. Biggest fruit
markets at Pasar Minggu and Pasar Cikini. Pasar Baru (near G.P.O.)
is best for fabrics. JI. Surabaya in Menteng is Jakarta's densely
packed flea market: silver filigree, leatherwork, batik, Mario
Lanza records, Delft, old coins, sets of false teeth, Kalimantan
spears, teak chests; best in the late afternoons when they want
to make last sales and go home. Flowers and tropical fish on JI.
Sumenep in Menteng. There's another flower market near Pasar Majestic
in Kebayoran. Birds from all over Indonesia in front of Jatinegara
market, JI. Raya Jatinegara, 8 am-4 pm, from Rp75 to 2500 (for
macaws and parrots); JI. Stasiun Senen is another bird market
with bird auctions. Sarinah Car Park is the tourist bird market;
more fun to look at the tourists. Newest and biggest bird market
is on JI. Pramuka, 8 am-6 pm. Buy felt baseball caps by the G.P.O.,
at least Rp1500 cheaper than sunglasses and equally as effective..
Bargain them down to Rp300. shopping: Cheapest batik in Jakarta
is at GKBI, JI. Agus Salim 39; a producers' cooperative, with
a large assortment of all qualities, both contemporary and classic
designs. Precious stones specialist and salesman, Mr. Spiro, JI.
Kebon Sirih 13.
The
cheapest tapes in the world are sold in Indonesia: tapes (2 albums
on one) which cost Aus$9 in Australia cost only Rp500 (Aus $1.25)
in Jakarta (though better quality in Denpasar). The Sarinah Dept
Store has fixed prices and you don't have to wade through all
the cheap crap in Yogya expecting to be ripped off. Instead buy
Indonesian arts and crafts at Sarinah's and you'll at least get
what you pay for. bookshops: Gunung Agung, JI. Kwitang (near Pasar
Senen) is the largest bookshop in Indonesia (even has a branch
in Jayapura). Other good bookshops ore: Sarinah Department Store,

not far from Tropen is Gramedia, for English books on Indonesia;
Bhratara, JI. OtoIskandardinata 111/29. Foreign books are quite
dear and newspapers arrive weeks late; instead read them at the
Lembaga Indonesia-Amerika, JI. Teuku Umar 9, or at the British
Council. antiques: Antique and curio shops are along JI. H.S.
Swim (parallel to JI. Thamrin) and on JI. Kebon Sirih. For old
Dutch bottles and jugs, Tanjung Prick is the place. Chinese antique
porcelain shops are also found on Jl. Majapahit. For old Chinese
kebayas, go to Glodok (Chinatown).
