Thousand
Islands (Pulau Seribu): To visit these actually only 600 islands,
disembark near Tanjung Prick. Board a boat to P. Seribu (P. Air)
from Sanggar Bahari, Rp1000. Leaves at 8 am, returns 3 pm, a 90
minute passage. Or take a boat from Kartika Bahari pier to Pulau
Puteri. The nearest islands are only 10-15 km from Jakarta. P.
Genteng for the best skindiving. Reefs of P. Opak Besar and P.
Puterfi are filled with tropical fish, multicolored corals and
shells. Go clamming on P. Barat. On P. Onrust, Captain Cook's
ship the Endeavor put in for repairs in 1770; an old shipyard
is here plus a fort's ruined foundations in the woods with 200
year old moss-covered headstones. Visit the bird islands of P.
Bokor and P. Rambut. More remote and unpeopled islands: Pabelokan,
Sibaru Kecil and Sibaru Besar with fine beaches and coconut plantations.
On P. Kelor find big 1' m long black lizards. The Thousand Islands
are really a tropical paradise, hard to believe that Jakarta's
so close. Now being 'developed as a paradise'
