Arts:
Culturally speaking, this city is the 'Yogya' of the Sundanese.
At Yayason Pusat Kebudayan, JI. Naripan, at 9 pm each Sat. night
until morning, are wayang golek performances, Rp2-300 entrance.
West Java is the home of this wayang medium (larger puppets than
Central Java's) and the Sundanese would rather see wayang golek
than the shadow play. Each night at Gedung Kesinian, JI. Baranang
Siang 1, there are performances at 7 pm, Rpl-100. Could be anything:
wayang orang, orchestras, western theatre productions, ballet,
kroncong bands, drama, Reog, etc.
For
Sundanese music and dance, Konservatori Karawitan Indonesia, JI.
Buahbatu 212; listen to traditional Sundanese orchestra, the kecapi
suling, with its soft-toned flutes and the long vibrating notes
of the kecapi. Also the angklung, an instrument used in olden
times to create excitement while marching into wars, or to announce
the arrival of a ruler. Bandung has many commercial landscape
painters and art fairs now and then. One of its finest landscape
artists is Wadhi, born 1917. Pak Ujo's School: JI. Padasaka 8.
See wayang golek performances from 4-6 pm. Almost every day 3-6
pm there are also Sundanese dancing and other performances here;
costs Rp400 entrance, also Rp1000 seats but you can get a student
discount. Pak Ujo's sells angk/ung, a whole set for around Rp5000.
crafts: JI. Braga for souvenirs, leather, art galleries, antiques.
The
Leather Palace is a more expensive shop but has fine wares; cheaper
shops on other streets. Bandung is a good place to buy shoes;
have them made very well and cheaply. Canadian, JI. Markoni, is
the best known shoemaker, Rp10,000 for a pair of boots. Also for
homemade leather shoes try Lucia, JI. Martadinata 21. For wooden
shoes (Rp2000) try the place on the corner of JI. Pacinan Lama
and JI. Banceuy, only 500 m from the tourist office. Kenangan,
JI. Banceuy 37, is a good shop to buy wayang puppets. High standard
Chinese porcelain fakes are sold at the Ceramic Research Center.
Handicrafts and wooden puppets are for sale at Luwes, JI. Braga
44; and Sukama, JI. Braga 88-two of the biggest shops.
