km S.E. of Jakarta. Third largest city in Indonesia (1.3 million),
surrounded by mountains covered in tea plantations and a great
tangle of high volcanic peaks. Bandung has perfect weather - high
altitude climate, cool fresh air. Equatorial dusks. Brightly colored
becaks. West Java accounts for 60% of Indonesia's textile production,
mostly concentrated here. The native people of West Java, the
Sundanese, make up the majority of this city's population. Acclaimed
for the beauty of their women, their dreamy melancholy music,
and for their evocative poetic imagery, the Sundanese tend to
be more light-hearted and eartheir than the refined tired old
Javanese race of Central and East Java. In Sundanese history there's
no ancient palace tradition of ruling Hindu princes; they practice
Islam with devotion and strong faith.
The
Dutch loved it here and their long occupation is seen in the sombre
middle class architecture such as found in early 20th Century
West European cities. Unfortunately, Bandung has lost much of
its glamour and nowadays appears dilapidated and covered in dust.
Bandung's women wear western dress, very style-conscious. In Aug.
1975 the first Indonesian rock festival took place here featuring
groups like Voodoo Child, God Bless, etc. Many of the young grow
