Botanical Gardens: These world famous gardens, right behind the Presidential Palace, were the inspiration of the English Governor General of Indonesia during the Napoleonic Wars, Sir Stamford Raffles, an avid botanist. His wife is buried on the grounds. This incredible 111 hectare estate has been here for over 160 years and the city of Bogor has risen up around them. See plants (15,000 varieties) and trees from as far afield as Ceylon, the Himalayas, Philippines; open-air cactus gardens, great twisting foot-thick overhead vines, river paths, ponds, enormous waterlilies. Visit the orchid hothhouses with 3000 registered hybrids (open daily 8-1) for black orchids, the giant orchid grammatophyllum speciosum which can bear 3000 flowers at one time, orchids no bigger than a thimble, orchids with experimental scents such as antiseptic and toilet soap. Also a well-stocked botanical library, a Zoological Museum (open 8-12) where they have a 27 meter long skeleton of a Blue Whale, skeleton of the giant Japanese crab, plus other displays of Indonesian wildlife.

Early Dutch researchers used these gardens to develop cash crops (oil palm, vanilla, sugar cane, corn, beans, taro) shade trees and timber in order to provide profits for the mother country during the so-called Forced Cultivation Period (1830-70) when all of Java was turned into one vast work camp. Cassava was encouraged as a 2nd food crop on Java to support an increasing agrarian population so as to increase productivity. There was even famine in many parts of Java because rice was being exported to Australia and to Europe in the early 19th Century.
Botanical gardens: 5 km south of Cibodas, 41 km S.E. of Bogor, on the slopes of the twin volcanoes Pangrango and Gede, visit this branch of the Bogor Botanical gardens, a beautiful park with cooler climate specimens of tropical mountain trees and plants including 15 m high tree ferns (also phila). It's an 8 hour climb up the forest reserve behind this park to the summit of G. Pangrango and the broken crater of G. Gede; maybe see Jakarta harbor or even Pulau Seribu.
