By sea to Singapore and Medan: Pelni's Tampomas does the trip to the North Sumatra city of Medan for Rp13,500, stopping off at the little island of Tanjung Pinang on the way (continue on to Singapore by regular launch, Rp4500). Leaves Jakarta usually each Mon., 6-7 pm, arrives Tanjung Pinang 6 am Tues., and arrives Medan Wed. 9 am. Head up to the top deck where it's windier and cleaner. You can buy 1st class food (Rp1000) or 2nd class food (Rp750) even if you're deck class. If you have shoes, go into the 1st class bar and have a drink. Get boats to Singapore and Medan cheaper by going around the Jakarta docks and checking different shipping companies. Maybe get to Singapore one day less than the Pelni ship and you could pay only US$10 a day or about Rp10,000 all the way. Try P.T. Wasesa Line, JI. R.E. Martadinata, Jakarta; their ship the Telanaipura has cabins on the forecastle; leaves for Singapore about every 10 days (takes 3 days). Eastern Orient Lines, Pos 1, Tanjung Prick, has ships to Medan for as cheap as Ro8000.
