From
Jakarta by sea: Get vessels to virtually anywhere in the archipelago
or the world. The Arafat Lines office is located at JI. Johan
8. Pelni Lines sells tickets at 158 Pasar Baru, 2nd floor, or
at Senen Raya 26; they give student discounts (even for cabin
class!) but only at the head office in Jakarta on JI. Wachid Hasyim
1/A. Pelni has 3 boats a month to different ports of Irian Jaya
(stops in 3-4 ports along the way), Rp40,000. Mersk Lines has
regular shipping to west coast USA if you're interested. Be systematic
about checking all the ships at the docks everyday and you can
work your way to anywhere. Try Norwegian ships. for Padang (west
coast of Sumatra): Get ready for cooler weather.
Kalimantan
Shipping Lines, JI. Tanah Abang 11/123, Tel. 43296. Don't need
to go to the office, just buy your ticket on the boat itself;
pay (Rp9750) money to Mr. Soenardi or Mr. Rusmaui only. Embarks
from Pelabuhan Nusantara, Pos. 1, Number 004. Leaves every Wed.,
takes 60 hours, 2 good meals are served, the bathrooms are clean,
and the chief officer is a great guy. Pelni has launched a new
ship on the Jakarta-Padang run, the Nukori, with tile bathrooms,
hand showers, even decent food; costs Rp9280 deck class from an
agent or cheaper if you buy at the docks. Don't buy at Jalan Jaksa
5 (Rpl1,500!). Should disembark on Sat. at noon, but usually doesn't
get away until 8 pm. Not that crowded.
