Presidential Palace: The road from Jakarta runs smack into this former Governor's Mansion with deer roaming over undulating lawns under big shady trees. This was the official residence of the Dutch Governor-Generals from 1870-1942. While Baron Gustaf Willem van Imhoff, GovernorGeneral for the Dutch Each Indies Company, was making a duty tour around the country in 1744 he came across the peaceful village of Bogor which fascinated him. He had a small resthouse built here and named it Buitzenzorg ('Without a Care'), A road was built twisting uphill for 60 km from his residence in Batavia leading right into the 25 hectate resthouse yard.

Many huge glamorous parties were held here, the Dutch elite coming up from Batavia for riding, hunting and dancing. The deer were fattened by the Dutch to provide venision for banquets. Pleasant Bogor village eventually developed into the noisy city of today and the country estate into a splendid colonial palace. Inside the mansion is the late President Sukarno's private collection of paintings by Indonesia's most famous painters some of whom he 'improved' to suit his tastes: there are 219 paintings and 136 sculptures, with many voluptuous nudes representing every race. Hotel Salak, opposite the palace, arranges tours.
