trains for Sumatra: Leave only once daily from Kota Station at 3 pm and once a day from Tanah Abang Station at 5:10 am. You ride with it first to Merak, West Java, and then board the ferry across the Sunda Strait to Panjang, South Sumatra, from where you continue northwards by train 400 km to Palembang. A through ticket from Kota Station, economy class, is Rp2500; from Tanah Abang economy class is Rp 3750. You can do it cheaper by train if you do it in stages. Or take a bus JakartaMerak, Rp400, 3 hours, then board a ferry (6 hours) for Panjang; Rp 750 for the afternoon ferry, Rp1000 for the night ferry. Take the ferry from Merak that leaves at 6 pm if you want a through connection on train to Palembang. If you want to hang around Panjang all day long (not much to do), catch the ferry from Merak that leaves at 10 pm.
