Situ Patenggang is a natural cold water high mountain lake surrounded by forest and tea plantations 46 km S.W. of Bandung. Gunung Telaga: Climb G. Telaga where there's a sulphur lake, wild oxen and peacocks; 4 hours by oplet from Bandung, then walk. A very bad road to get there, but definitely worth the trip. Completely free nature, bubbling noisy lava pools and bright green water like a chemical. Only a simple warung serving food there. the watershed: Travel over the watershed of Java where the rivers Citarum and Cimanuk (Ci = 'river') run northwards towards the Java Sea while other streams run southwards to the Indian Ocean. Once every 3 days a bus leaves Pangalengan via Kertasari for Garut. Spend the night in Kertasari, then the bus starts rattling and crashing up the mountains of the Papandayan. Remnants of the original tropical forests of Java are here with wild pigs and deer, spices and herbs growing wild. From Cikajang, the road winds down to the fertile sunny valley to Garut.
