Batik
pekalongan: Weavers used to keep awake and burn incense through
the night before starting work on a new fabric. Now they're in
it more for the bread. Numerous batik factories and shops. As
in Yogya, peddlers with their bundle of batik come yp to restaurant
tables and there's always a guy around the hotels who has batik
of every variety to show you. Coming directly from the kampungs
where the batik is made, they are generally cheaper (starting
price Rp750 each) than at the shops on the main streets JI. Hayamv
uruk and JI. Hasanudin, especially if you buy 3 or more. Visit
Tobal Batik, JI. Teratai 7a, Klego: rayon and cotton kaftans with
bright flowers, Rp2500; Losempieces with the Phoenix bird on beige
background Rp1000each; fairly long scarves, Rp350; bikinis and
skirts.
Also
Megamandoon cloud-patterned batik, most beautiful, for about Rp5000.
Princess Munroh Batik Gallery, run by Salim Alayadrus, JI. H.A.
Salim 31, Tel. 575, sells batik 4-5 m long for about Rp800 per
meter. Most of the really fine Pekalongan-style batik comes from
the village of Kedungwuni, 9 km from town, Rp40 by bemo. For really
superb work visit the Leonardo of batik, Pak Oey Tjoen in Kedungwuni,
JI. Raya 104. He uses 8-9 colors on one piece. Real close up or
at a distance it looks just as good. A sarung costs Rp75,000 and
a kain Rp95,000, starting and ending price. Unbelievably intricate
designs. Other workshops in the following places: Kampung Pesindon,
see Mr. Yahya who speaks English; the Kauman (Old Town), and Kampung
Arab around JI. Surabaya where there are many batik factories
and sellers; Kampung Sampangan, off JI. Hasanudin; the Chinese
batik factory Rinbun Jaya, JI. Urip Sumohardjo; Mr. P. Bahur on
JI. Java; Krapyak; also visit the Batik Museum, use it as a standard
when buying.
