Crafts:
Unique Cirebon art shows Chinese influences both in its motifs
frock and clouds') and in the lacquer technique used. Chinese
characteristics are also evident in stone, wood, jade, and ivory
carvings. Nuances of Cirebon batik are found nowhere else on Java.
All the finest pieces in the kratons' museums have been sold for
mere money, only small collections left. Most of the traditional
batik is sent to Jakarta, being too expensive for the local market
lRp7-15,0001. Buy batik in the following places: 1) around Pasar
Pagi, on JI. Karanggetas, there are many batik shops: Toko Batik
Permana, JI. Karanggetas 18; and Toko Batik Saudara, JI. Karanggetas
46.
For
batik kain, most of these shops start out at Rp5000 but you can
knock them down to possibly as low as Rp1500. You'll also find
many examples of the Indramayu-batik (more involved patterns),
plus examples of Solo and Pekalongan styles; 2) Pasar Belong,
until 4 pm; 3) the G.K.B.I. (Batik Cooperative), JI. Pekarungan
27, open Mon.-Thurs. 8-12, and 1-4; Fri. 8-11 and 2-4; Sat. 8-12.
Many varieties of batik; 41 Some of Cirebon's best batik is made
in Trusmi, 5 km west. For Trusmi, take a becak first to Gunungsari
Station, then take a Colt to Plered, then walk 1 km to Trusmi
from Plered down a country lane full of batik waving and drying
in the sunlight. Try Mr. Masina's workshop where some 14 women
work. Also Budhi Tesna's for batik painting and printing. Many
other workshops in this village. Although the batik is actually
made here, it is not necessarily cheaperyou just have more of
a selection. They want Rp1520,000 for the finer pieces; the highest
priced are Rp60,000.
