Demak: 25 km east of Semarang on road to Surabaya. The first Islamic kingdom on Java which grew powerful in the years 1500-1546. In 1478 the ruler built Demak's wooden mosque, the oldest one on Java, a prime example of the joint architectural influences of the Java-Hindu and the Islamic cultures. The Demak mosque is so holy that 7 pilgrimmages to it are the equivalent to a pilgrimmage made to Mecca. The mosque has many relics; nearby is a burial ground for 60 sultans. On Besar 10 (Javanese calendar) thousands gather here to celebrate ldhul Adha Day. Although it once was a prosperous seaport, Demak is now 12 km inland and all its old boats grounded or laid up
