Temples
in the Semarang area: Candi Pringapus, on east side of Gunung
Sendara north of Parakan, is a Shivaite group of temples with
wellcrafted arabesques and porch decorations, kalaheads with lower
jaws, petting scenes, and potbellied dwarves. Take a bus from
Semarang to Magelang, Rp150, then from Magelang to Parakan, Rp100.
Gedong Sono (Nine Temples): Go first by bus to Magelang, get off
at Ambarrawa (Rp200), then change to public taxi to Bandungan
(Rp100). Or take bus from Semarang to Lemahabang, then a taxi-truck
or andong 5 km further to hilly Bandungan, a holiday resort with
bungalows Rp1000-3500.
The
quite comfortable PJKA Railways Guesthouse is Rp1000. About 3
km after this village, take horse or walk up road which turns
up the mountainside where 9 minor temple groups stand on tops
of 6 different hills. Most beautiful temple location on Java.
This Shivaite-Hindu complex dates from the 8th-9th Century and
clusters around ravines and sulphur springs. Includes a Vishnu
temple, very rarely worshipped on Java. Most are elaborately built
and in excellent condition. See Temple II with its well preserved
kala-makara relief on the portal. Place chosen with great care;
sweeping view high over the central Javanese plain plus 3 of its
most towering volcanoes. Wander about. Walk the ancient pilgrims'
paths; takes about 3-4 hours to visit all the sites
