The
oldest temples of Java lie on this pear-shaped plateau 26 km N.W.
of Wonosobo. The name comes from Di Hyang ('Abode of the Gods').
Because of its silent invigorating mountain heights, skudding
clouds, mineral lakes, cool misty atmosphere, this area has been
a sacred spot since early times. Gets only 1500 tourists a year.
No telephones. getting there: Approach Dieng either from Semarang
(S.E. 132 km) or from Yogya (north 135 km). From Yogya, take bus
first to Wonosobo, Rp300. In Wonosobo, stay overnight at Losmen
Jawa Tengah (Railway Guesthouse), JI. Agung 45 near the bus station,
Rp400; this losmen is about the most convenient. Losmen Baru,
JI. Kawedanan 2/A, Rp800 double, Rp500 single.
Hotel
Petra, JI. Agung, Rp400. Pleksant Hotel Merdeka, Rp2000 double.
Restaurant Asia is expensive. For information, see the man in
the blue and cream rumah makan in back of the bus station. Next
morning take a truck, oplet or hitch up to the 2093 m high village
of Dieng. The road passes tobacco plantations, rugged steep landscapes
with clouds below the road, bamboo aquaducts, pale eucalyptus,
sleeping volcanoes. See Kawah Si Kidang, a crater with smoking
boiling sulpher mud, and Kawah Si Led, another large crater with
whitish smoke and water. Telaga Merdada Lake, surrounded by green
hills, has cool weather, misty pines, wild roses.
