Garebeg Besar: A religious festival based on the Muslim alqui an. Mass prayers are held in mosques and public squares, then goats, sheep, lambs, cows and buffaloes are ceremoniously slaughtered (korban) to commemorate Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his own son for God. The meat is distributed to the poor. The Sultan, with a retinue of nobility and court dignitaries and large floats of gunungan, takes part in a procession from the kraton to Mesjid Agung. A big bamboo theatre is set up in the northern alun2.

Labuhan: Means 'offering'. An annual ceremony, the day after the sultan's birthday. At 8 am offerings leave the kraton and are taken to Parangkusumo (1 km west of Parangtritis) on the south coast of Java where the sultan's old clothes are dedicated to the Queen of the South Seas, Loro Kidul, and put out to sea on a raft. Other offerings, nail clippings and hair trimmings, are buried in the sand. (Each Juma'at, every 35 days, Chinese women come and offer sacrifices as well.) Similar offerings are sent to the volcanoes Merapi and Lawu, and once every 8 years, to the village of Dlepih near Wonogiri.
