A
small town 90 km N.E. of Semarang on the north coast of Central
Java. Jepara was the main port of the 8th Century Hindu Mataram
empire; now a small town whose claim to fame is its woodcarving.
Best traditional woodcarvers on Java work in this area (in Yogya,
they're more academic). Except for the hinges, no nails, screws,
or metal joinery is used. Nice ride to get here on the bus or
minibus from the Kudus Terminal Bis, Rp150, 35 km. You know you're
getting close because you see trucks and dokars rumbling by piled
high with carved chests and cabinets. Men come in from the surrounding
villages to work in the shops as carvers. To see carvers in action
visit: Tahunan village, 4 km from Jepara on the highway to Kudus;
Mantingan, before Ratu Kalinjamat; Blakang Gunung, 10 km from
Jepara (they specialize in a caged lion carved from a single piece
of wood).
Purchase
furniture such as beds, bookcases, writing desks, jewel boxes,
and round or heart-shaped wooden buttons (Rp600 for 12). Fine
quality furniture sets cost from Rp250,000 to 1/2 million. Kursi
gadjah, another design known as the 'elephant chair', costs up
to Rp125,000 a set (costs Rp30,000 alone for the labor). You can
get the price down, but not by much, maybe by only Rp5-10,000.
There are cheaper models: for one set of Kursi Antik, Rp25,00070,000.
The carvers are paid by each meter they carve. The wood comes
from Blora and Cepu (East Java); teakwood for the most part, but
also find kayu mahoni (mahogany) and kayu meranti,o statues are
usually made of sono wood. Learn carving? S.T.M. (Bagian Ukir)
gives a three-year course both modern and traditional styles.
stay: Jepara is a restful place. Losmen Asia, JI. Kartini 32,
Rp600. Losmen Jakarta, JI. Pemuda 16, Rp600 or Rp750 double. There
are also several hotels located by the bus station.
