Stay:
Cheapest is Hotel Amin, JI. Menur 448, Rp400 or Rp750 double;
lies Rp50-75 by becak from Simpang Tujuh (the town center, where
Tosera Shopping Center is); weak electricity and rooms are very
small; like a drab motel. Hotel Devi Tungal, JI. Kenari, Rp500;
not very clean. An OK place is Hotel Slamet run by Frits Ong Tjinghap,
JI. Jen Sudirman 63, Rp600 or Rp1200 double (bigger room); some
rooms alright, some not. Eat at the Flamingo Cafe. If you bring
Frits a nice big picture of a flamingo he'll give you a night
free at the hotel. Hotel Notosari, JI. Kepodang 12 (off JI. Bintinganbaru),
Tel. 245, Rp1500 single and double.
Very
central, well kept, and a nice quiet courtyard. Hotel Duta Wisata,
JI. Sunan Muria, Rp1800 for double, is in a residential neighborhood,
a fine out-of-the-way place, so book ahead. Has a TV. eat: Try
jenang kudus made of glutinous rice, brown sugar and coconut.
It can keep 10 days, though it hardens. Another specialty is soto
kudus made from chicken. In the Kudus Bus Terminal ask for Pak
Denuh's, the most famous of all the soto kudus soupmakers, Rp50
only. Or try it and other traditional dishes at Rumah Makan Hijau,
near the bus terminal; Indonesian/Javanese food at its best. Rumah
Makan Intan, JI. Sunan Kudus 2/A; delicious bakmie goreng Rp300
and other Chinese-style meals, Rp3500. A fancy place is Garuda
Restaurant, JI. Panglima Sudirman 1, for Indonesian, Chinese and
European food. Don't miss the masrochan carts, Rp10.
