Batik
factories and shops: The really fine batik you can't buy in the
markets. In batik factories, watch families and artisans at work
plus visit showrooms where you can buy materials. Most close at
around 8 pm. Just as important as getting batik cheap is being
able to trust your agent, that it is what he or she says it is.
There's a big difference in quality of batik lulls; not every
artist who takes it up can do it well. There are 3 qualities of
batik cloth; given here with comparative prices: biru, Rp 1000;
prima, Rp 1600; primisima, Rp2200. JI. Tirtodipuan: South of the
Kraton.
There are over 25 batik factories alone on this street. For Chinese-style
batik, try Plentong, JI. Tirtodipuran 28. On the same street is
Mr. Lod E.A. - Philosopher, Artist, Your Friend'; open 10-1, 5-6,
where you can see the batik process. Visit also Batik Winotosastro,
JI. Tirtodipuran 34. Batik Sofi: Past Hotel Ambarrukmo towards
Solo, take a left up Kledokan in Kec. Depok (Slemon). She's an
agent for batik materials from all over Indonesia, but specializes
in the Pekalongan style. Some really creative clothing. Batik
tulis for Rp9-13,000, for which many other shops ask Rp25,000.
Terang Bulan: This is Yogya's batik supermarket, on JI. Jen. A.
Yani 76 (exactly opposite Mirota's Deli). This shop is especially
rewarding if you don't know anything about batik,
Has
a really fine selection from Rp650 sarungs to Rp35,000 pekalongans.
All kinds of material at fixed honest prices. Gives you an idea
of what you should be paying. Compare the different prices for
cap and batik tulis work. Browse and learn. Terang Bulan also
sells fine locally-made /urik batik material for Rp860 for 2 %
m and Rp1050 for 3 m; comes also in green, beige and orange; when
lurik is banded it's very striking.
