Dance and drama: Be wary of some dance teachers. They could ask for money in advance (Rp17,000 or more), then set up a hassel with you (like they want to sleep with you), then there's a confrontation whereby you don't get your money back. Even the more renowned teachers are known to pull this. A superb dancer, Bagong Kussudiardjo, JI. Laksamana, teaches his own interpretation of modern jazz ballet. Rehearsals 4-8 pm except Friday. Vishnu Wardhana, JI. Suryodiningratan 13, teaches a whole range of dance styles, from traditional Indonesian to modern improvisational. Krido Mardawa, sultan's palace, for classical Serimpi and Bedaya in the Yogya and Solo styles; rehearsals every Sun. 10 am-2 pm. Arena Budaya, JI. Suryodiningratan, also welcomes visitors. There are many dance companies. Ask at the tourist office about those operating, times and addresses. ASDRAFI, near the Watercastle, JI. Sompilan 12, for drama study and cinematography.

Each Sat. at 9 am you can see performances of the horse.trance dance (Kuda Kepang) near Candi Sewu in Prambanan village; the whole bit: eating glass and hay, slurping water from a pail. Sometimes it takes the leader two hours to bring the dancers out of trance. At Krido Beksa Wirama School, JI. K.H. Wakhid Hasyim, classes are packed. Watch old Java come alive in the story of Ken Angrok, episodes from the Ramayana, mask plays. Rehearsals are from 8-9 pm on Sunday on the Tejakusman pendopo. Classical Javanese dancing was the exclusive prerogative of the courts until the Krido Beksa- Wirama school opened in 1918 outside the walls of the kraton. At the THR each night, 9 pm to midnight, view the theatre of the people; wayang orang, Ketoprak, kroncang bands, satirical Ludruk comedies in which men dress up as women. Tickets cost between Rp75-125 depending upon whether you stand or sit. Go after dark. Loudspeakers blast out hit tunes. Saturday nights are wild.
