Go up during the week, they've got a different price list during the weekends. Pick a cloudless day. stay: Tell the driver you want to get off at Hotel Garuda, most of the other hotels are Rp1000 and up. As you go up the hill see the big sign, then walk 400 m in from the road. Hotel Garuda is spotlessly clean, Rp500 double; bargain if they don't give you this rate. Get room number 2 with the French windows so you can sit in your hotel room and watch the volcano spit fire. Honking geese wake you in the mornings. In back of Hotel Garuda there's a swimming pool and a track that leads up to Merapi, a shorter but harder climb than the most trodden path. eat: Food is expensive compared to Yogya, Rp200 for a square meal. Buy eggs, bread, and make sandwiches. Bananas are cheap, Rp3 each. Go to the big grocery store down the road; fried rice, Rp l 50.
