Mt. Merapi (Fire Mountain): One of the most destructive volcanoes in the world, it erupts about once every 5% years. Merapi needs 6 volcanologists' posts high on its slopes to keep an eye on it. When it blew in 1006, it covered Borobudur 48 km away and devastated the land around the monument to such an extent that it remained uninhabited for generations. Since that year, volcanoes in Indonesia (two volcanic belts spread over a total length of 5500 km) have killed over 150,000 people. Ruling princes of Central Java today tfirow precious silk textiles into Merapi's crater because it's believed that high volcanoes have a life and spirit of their own. When Merapi erupts, tigers are sometimes driven down into the lower slopes.

During its hot-lava stage, Yogya's normally tranquil river is turned into a cocoa-colored torrent. getting there: Climb Merapi safest from its eastern side. From Yogya take a bus to Kartosuro, then change to Boyolali, Rp175. Then take an oplet to Selo where a guide for the climb can be hired at Pos Pengawasan for about Rp1200-1500. On its slopes there are many mountain forest tracks. The summit, usually with a cloud cutting through it, is 2911 m high, a 7 hour climb. The very steep climb takes you through a countryside of lantana flowers and misty ridges, then up through rasberry country to the barren peak. Experience this crater at night with its rivulets of orange-red molten lava, sparks spilling over the rim, black acrid smoke, enormous clouds of steam. Bring a sleeping bag.
