Much of the ruins are being renovated at present, the swimming pools and crumbling walls rebuilt and many of the gates have been replastered. It's now a renewed ruin, built along the old lines, the life and drama going out of the place. Shops selling batik materials here are being updated as well, some of them even look a bit classy. ASRI (School of Fine Arts): On JI. Gampingan. Sculpture, painting, graphics, commercial and industrial arts, art education, primitive, symbolic and decorative paintings (even nude drawing classes) are all taught here. ASRI is re-discovering the lost Javanese art of stone sculpture. A big art carnival is held in the 2nd half of January each year and a permanent exhibition of paintings is always on sale.
