Buddah-niches:
There are over 400 Buddah niches sculpted in the round. Small
bell-shaped stupas, which look like inverted lotus blossoms or
like bells of stone lattice-work, each contain a sitting statue
of an athletic young Buddah. Through the apertures the Buddah
can be seen only half in sunlight, half in shadows, each statue
only partly visible. This is calculated to bring home to the visitor
both the formless and the absolute reality, the two faces of god.
Each one of the hands are in different positions to represent
varioys mudras or symbols for Buddah's different actions such
as teaching, blessing, preaching, etc. Reaching in through the
lattices and touching Buddah's hands brings good luck. In the
niches above the 4 galleries are statues of reincarnated Buddahs,
each pointing to a different direction of the compass. There are
subtle differences between the latticed bells of the first and
2nd rows and those of the third. Most of the heads are missing.
They were knocked off or destroyed by Muslim vandals. You can
find them in museums in Holland, Paris, London, Boston.
