Candi Sewu: The 'Thousand Temples', 1 km north of Prambanan. Dates from the first half of the 9th Century. Largely in ruins, scattered in piles of stone blocks. It consisted once of a central temple and 250 minor temples and shrines with two rows of side chapels. To assist pilgrims in their meditations, the whole complex is shaped like a manda/a. Many niches, dark passageways, and 2 m tall dwarapa/a (Sanskrit for 'gateguard') demons leaning on one knee, and armed with swords and clubs, guard the entrances.
