location: The approach is about as unBuddhistlike as you can get, the roadway is choked on both sides with souvenir stalls. Many Indonesian visitors look upon Borobudur as just an object to have their pictures taken in front of; loud transistor radios and hawkers wreck the atmosphere. The best part of the monument is now cordoned off, there's signs all over telling you where to go and what to do, barbed wire everywhere. Some people leave after 5 minutes. It was built on the confluence of two rivers, always considered a holy spot in India. The view from the top of the stupa takes in lush green hills and meadows of palm trees rising up around it with the mountain peaks Merbabu and Merapi beyond.

The background looks like a miniature Himalayas. According to tradition, the architect who designed it was Gunadharma, whose face you can see to the right of the largest pinnacle in the Menorah mountain range just behind the monument. Kenari trees were planted around Borobudur in 1840. At the foot of the east stairway stands a sacred fig tree descended from the original Bodhitree under which the Buddah attained enlightenment. This particular tree was brought to Borobudur in 1928, a shoot of the holy tree in Ceylon which was itself a shoot of the original tree brought from India in the 3rd Century B.C.
