17 km east of Yogya, Rp75 by bus. It's an easy 17 km pushbike ride from Yogya through the countryside to Prambanan village. Or you can sling your rented bicycle on top of the bus, then use it to tour the temples once there. Lying among villages and green ricefields with the sharp peak of Merapi's volcano in the background, these temples were built at the beginning of the 10th Century. They were abandoned when the Hindu-Javanese kings moved from Central to East Java. Around 1600 A.D., all extant temples were toppled by an earthquake.

In the 19th Century, their blocks were carried off to pave roads, build sugar mills, bridges, railroads. In ancient times this area was a vast cemetary, not a city; people couldn't populate a place of death. Since these many candis were mausolea of dead kings, Central Java has become known as the Javanese 'Valley of the Kings'. It took a staggering agricultural productivity to enable pompous feudal monarchs to erect temples to their own glorification. Thus the rich Prambanan Plain has the most extensive. Hindu temple ruins in all of Indonesia. There's no telling how many more are still under the earth.
