On the inner wall gallery the Ramayana scenes are even more dramatic, expressive and down-to-earth than Borobudur's. There's an amazing harmony and technical skill in evidence. Humans and animals are anatomically flawless. Rama stories, of an unknown version, were first depicted on this temple in the 9th Century. Sprinkled throughout are Christmas tree-like Trees-of-Heaven flanked by animals, pots of money, half women and half birds (kinnaras), also rams, deer, cats, monkeys, geese and comic hares with oversized ears. Trees, rocks and water are more stylized, more earthy and responsive than Borobudur's with monkeys in fruit trees and busy kitchen scenes. Here and there on the reliefs you can even see traces of Buddhism (many stupas). In the office at Candi Prambanan, ask to see the erotic basrelief.
