shape:
Borobudur is in the form of a giant Buddhist prayer symbol, the
mandala. It's an unspectacular almost impassive shape, found nowhere
else; like something carved out of solid rock, or like a bursting
fruit. It was constructed to look like the holy Mount Meru of
India, a mythological model of the Universe. Its famous silhouette
can only be appreciated when viewed from the air. You can't enter
this stupa because it consists of just terraces built over the
top of a hill. Greek columns and Gothic cathedrals of Europe have
a vertical structure, but in Asia the pattern is horizontal. Temples
are laid out in square or rectangular enclosures and they rise
up to a gently culminating pyramid. This massive perfectly symmetrical
stupa is only one of 84,000 all over Asia which are said to contain
the remains of Buddah. But it is a stupa with a difference. This
unique building combines symbols of the circle (heaven), of the
square (earth) and of a stupa into one coherent whole. There are
many projections, making in all 36 corners. The foot is 122 sq.
m and the temple goes up tier by tier. Enter on your right, pradaksina,
which means that you pay tribute to the gods. The widest and lowest
terraces are used for processions.

The
5 galleries above it have but one internal and one external wall.
There are 10 square and round terraces from the base to the main
top-most stupa, each representing the individual stages towards
perfection in a man's life. The pilgrim's walk takes you around
the temple 9 times before reaching the top. There are 4 stairways,
in the middle and to each side, leading up to the top. The east
side's third gallery has the best preserved and most beautiful
gateway visitors are swallowed up symbolically by the ka/a-monster
upon entering, then given new spiritual life. Each sphere shows
striking differences; from the richly decorated square terraces
full of reliefs, Buddahs, niches, stupas, ornaments, to the circular
terraces devoid of all decorations. The higher you climb the more
heavenly the reliefs become until you reach the pinnacle or nirvana
(literally 'blowing out', extinction). At the top, there's a much
wider spaciousness and more simplicity. As you climb, you can
feel yourself rising, then flying off into space, a release from
the endless chain of rebirth. The topmost central stupa has a
diameter of over 15 meters. This pinnacle was once 10 meters higher
than it is now, seen for miles away to guide the pilgrim.
