Waicak Day: An event which usually falls on the most auspicious day in May. This annual Buddhist full moon ceremony commemorates the day that Buddah received enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, India, 500 years before Christ. Waicak Day also commemorates Buddah's birth, death, and final ascension to nirvana, the inaugeration of new monks, etc. It is attended by Indonesian Buddhists and also by many from abroad, especially Theravada Buddhists from Sri Lanka. The climax comes at 4 am when all the worshippers converge on the temple.

Each carrying a lighted candle, thousands of followers in saffron robes (for men) and white saris (for women) move barefoot in a slow nocturnal procession up the stairs of Borobudur while chanting and praying. Then they circle the temple clockwise towards the main stupa at the top.
