Ratu Baka: A few km south of Prambanan village. Take a right turn up the path from the 'Yogya 18 km' signpost. Watch for the sign at the foot of the ridge. Climb for 15 minutes to reach the entrance at the top. Ratu Bake lies on the ridge of Gunung Sewu (Thousand Hills). Once the site of a huge fortified 9th Century kraton-complex, it overlooks the luxuriant rolling green fields, bamboo groves and feathery palms of the whole Prambanan Plain. An extraordinarily tranquil view. This entire plateau is full of ruins, some not yet completely excavated. There are remains of monumental stone platforms, exquisite floors of large pillared halls, paved stone passages, bathing places, gates, stairways, shrines, chambers, deep cisterns. Once a retreat for royal hermits, a stone discovered here had an inscription on it which showed that a Sailendra princess who ruled in Java between the 8th and 9th Centuries was related to a reigning dynasty of ancient Ceylon. Sinhalese monks lived in a fortress monastery here more than 1000 years ago.
