Eat:
For the cheapest food, learn the different sounds which serve
as trademarks for the sellers; they'll come and feed you- ice
cream, bakmi, beras kencur drinks, etc. Exactly opposite Hotel
Central on JI. Ahmad Dahlan is a small warung serving kopi, pisang
goreng, nasi campur (Rp100). Down the same street is Rumah Makan
Populair, JI. Ahmad Dahlan 52; great food, meals Rp250-300; their
cap cai is hard to compare, enough for two. Aneke Rasa, JI. Slamet
Jiyadi 101; good food but average meals cost Rp4-600. Many small
warungs in Kampung Purwosari make specific Solonese dishes, Rp150
per portion. Rumah Makan Parts, JI. Nonongan (in front of Hotel
Islam) for original Javanese food. Rumah Makan Miroso, near Bank
Bumi Daya at the eastern end.of JI. Slamet Riyadi, has unusually
good Chinese food.
Go
here if you're hungry because they really feed you, Rp300 for
an average meal which is as good as Solo's ritziest restaurant,
The Orient, but half the price; only open at night. The best sate
is opposite Hotel Nonongan on the corner near Aneka Rasa. The
Ramayana Restaurant, JI. Ronggowarsito 2, also has excellent chicken
sate, Rp250, Rumah Makan Centrum, JI. Kratonan 151, has a menu
which is like a magazine, so much to choose from. Here you get
what you pay for (Rp250-500); delicious meals. Along JI. Secoyudan:
Seger Ayem, JI. Secoyudan 16, has outsanding ice juices and a
combinasi bush, Rp150, which includes fresh tomatoes. Rumah Makan
Puas, JI. Secoyudan 30, has excellent gado2 and racikan selat,
both Rp100. Another place down the street sells loket yogya (similar
to gado2) for Rp75, fantastic and healthy; look for the sign.
There's cheap eating places around the train station for Solonese
specialties like nasi liwet (sweet salty), nasi rawon, nasi langgi
and nasi pecel tumpang, all Rp50-100, all different combinations
of rice with completely different tastes and condiments.
There
are many night markets: Pasar Lagi, Pasar Gede, Pasar Senggol,
etc. At night on the sidewalks try the local dessert, a portion
of rice custard on a cripsy pancake with banana slices on top
(also chocolate sprinkled ones); best hot. On JI. Teuku Umar at
night the hot milk tents open up; Rp75 with honey; Rp90 with honey
and egg yoke; Rp95 with honey, egg and chocolate. Other goodies
to munch on, a warm meeting place. One of the best of these street
tents at night is the first on the left going down JI. Teuku Umar
from JI. Riyadi, the one displaying the giant letters 'NASI GUDEG',
which is a Solonese speciality. Featuring a creamy coconut sauce
on top, here eat an outstanding meal for around Rpl-200. Madukoro,
12 km west of Solo in the little town of Kartosuro on road to
Yogya, has the best ayam goreng or seger ayam around; try also
the 'madukoro drink'.
