Best to go in dry season Apicturesque hiil station between Solo and Madiun. A placid crater lake sits right in the middle of the town with losmens and hotels overlooking the lake. There are two approaches: from Solo it costs Rp125 to Tawangmangu, then board a bemo for Rp250 over the mountain to Sarangan; or else approach from Madiun, Rp250 to Sarangan. Not many low-budget tourists visit Sarangan. In the tourist season July, Aug. and Sept., there are many elderly Dutch tourists; and every Sunday, Indonesian day tourists come by the droves, like Blackpool! There are many more Colts shuttling between Tawangmangu and Sarangan on Sundays. Sometimes Ludruk performances are held in the former old Dutch palace.
