The Solo River: The longest river on Java (560 km) which flows right through Solo. You can cross this river on a regular poled ferry south of the city. For thousands of years an important waterway, the only navigable link between rich agricultural inland Java and the coastal ports of Gresik, Sedayu and Surabaya. Imperial Cleopatra-like barges up to 13 m long and 7 m wide with dining halls, banners, and game/an orchestras once traveled up and down the Solo River in the 18th Century. Along the banks of this river was one of the first places in the world where man lived. Today you can dig out with your own hands mastodon (early elephant) tusks, sabre toothed tiger teeth, giant ox vertebrae or maybe even a homoso/oensis skull.

Sangiran: Get a Colt from Balapan Train Station to Kalioso, Rp50. Then from Kalioso walk 3 km to Sangiran. For students of paleontology, geology, and natural history, visit this site in a picturesque valley 16 km north of Solo. A small but unique museum here exhibits fossils and various kinds of plant and animal life hundreds of millions of years old. i here are tragments of stegodon and mastodon, rhinoceros, crocodiles, deer, pigs, apes, and molluscs. See different layers of soil dating back to the Lower Pleistocene, Middle Pleistocene and the Pliocene eras. This is where a pithecanthropus erectus (Java Man) skull was found by a Dutch professor in 1936.
