Tawangmangu: A pretty retreat nestled on the slopes of Gunung Lawu 42 km, Rp125 by bus from Solo's bus station. It's 900 m high (300 m higher than Bandung). There's a herbal laboratory here: spices grow better in this colder climate. Nice place to just get away to, does your soul good. Hilly woodsy walks. Flowers of every description from tiny ones beside the trails to giant bushflowers, plus berries, strawberries. If you don't want to walk, hire horses Rp3-500 an hour. See the Thousand Falls (Grojogan Sewu). Visit a 100 m high waterfall, Rp100.
