This small agricultural community was once the capital of the mighty Majapahit Empire (1292-1389 A.D.), which under the ruthless and efficient Rasputin-like Gadjah Mada, controlled most of the islands of the archipelago in the 14th Century. This ancient capital was completely surrounded by a high red brick wall with deep pools, palaces, tournament fields, plazas, Shivaite and Buddhist temples, and lavish pavilions for the god-kings. Now there are just the remains of walls, bases, temples, and gapuras (gateways) scattered over a 15 sq km area.
