Vicinity
of Pacitan: The best view of the coast is from a rocky hillside
15 km south of Pacitan on the road to Wonogiri. The ocean sweeps
in and out of bays and foamy waves smash on rocks. Punung is 30
km from Pacitan, RplOO by bus. Three km beyond Punung Village
is Gua Tabuhan, the Musical Cave (Rp50 entrance) which was once
a hideway for the 19th Century guerilla leader Prince Diponegoro.
Just follow the signposts down a dirt track to the cave. A boy
will guide you through slippery 50 m high caverns. In the main
chamber listen to a unique game/an orchestra played by striking
rocks against stalactites, each in perfect pitch, the melody vibrating
and echoing at each blow (only 3 tunes).
In this area, in Danaraja village, lives one of the last wayang
beber da/angs on Java, Pak Sarnen, who performs and reads using
16th Century scrolls. This is also agate country where cut and
polished stones sell from Rp200 to Rp5000. Have them set by the
skilled silversmiths of Bali, or bring your own gold and have
Balinese craftsmen set them for you. Kolak Caves are 12 km south
of Punung near the south coast; some say the finest caves on Java.
Baksoka River Valley, 4 km from Punung towards Pacitan, has silicified
woods; many neolithic stone tools have been found here. Wonogiri:
45 km S.E. of Solo. Known for its game/an instrumentmaking. Climb
the peak behind Wonogiri and look out over the plains to see the
cones of 3 southern volcanoes, Merapi, Merbabu and Lawu. Ngadirojo,
near Wonogiri, is known for its beautiful Javanese women.
